Solution

The correct option is C q24πε0a(422)
Let, bottom two charges +q and q are interchanged.

Work done, (W) in interchanging the charges will be equal to the change in potential energy, (ΔU) of the system due change in the positions of the charges,

W=ΔU=UfUi...(1)

where,
Initial potential energy of the system,

Ui=14πε0(q2a+q22 aq2aq2a+q22 aq2a)

Final potential energy of the system,

Uf=14πε0(q2aq22 a+q2a+q2aq22 aq2a)

Substituting the values in equation (1), we get

W=14πε0[(q2aq22 a+q2a+q2aq22 aq2a)(q2a+q22 aq2aq2a+q22 aq2a)]

W=q24πε0a[422]

Hence, option (c) is correct answer.
