The Indo-Gangetic Plains have been formed by the interplay of the three major river systems which are - the Indus, the Ganga and the Brahmaputra along with their tributaries.

These can be broadly divided into three sections:​
  1. The Western Indo-Gangetic Plains: The western part of the Indo-Gangetic Plains is called the Punjab Plains. It is formed by the Indus and its tributaries. The larger part lies in Pakistan. The Indus and its tributaries originate in the Himalayas. This section of the plain is dominated by the doabs. ​
  2. The Central Indo-Gangetic Plains: The central part of the Indo-Gangetic Plains is called Ganga Plains. It extends between the river Ghaggar and Teesta. It is spread in the states of Northern India such as Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. ​
  3. The Eastern Indo-Gangetic Plains: The eastern part of the Indo-Gangetic Plains is called Brahmaputra Plains. It lies in Assam and is formed by the river Brahmaputra river and its tributaries.
