Question

From the edge of a building of 500m high, a boy throws a stone horizontally with an initial speed of 10m/s .Neglecting air resistance, [i]find the time taken by the stone to reach the ground[ii] The vertical component of its velocity before it touches the ground [iii]The horizontal distance covered by the stone during this time interval

Solution

let the time taken by the stone to cover 500m vertical distance during its free fall be t..therefore according to second eqn of motion,i) 500=12×10×t2 or t2=100 or t=10 second.ii) the final velocity before touching the ground is given by first eqn of motion,v=10×10=100ms-1.iii) the horizontal distance covered X=u t=10×10=100m.
