Question

From the list of the following salts choose the salt that most appropriately fits the description in the following:

[AgCl,MgCl2,NaHSO4,PbCO3,ZnCO3,KNO3,Ca(NO3)2]

(i) On heating this salt gives a yellow residue when hot and white when cold.

(ii) On heating this salt, a brwon-colored gas is evolved.

Solution

(i) Salt on heating gives a yellow residue when hot and white when cold:

  • Zinc carbonate (ZnCO3) on heating undergoes a decomposition process to give zinc oxide (ZnO) and carbon dioxide gas(CO2). In a cold state, Zinc carbonate is a white powdery solid but on heating, it starts to turn yellow and decompose. Thus this process Carbon dioxide gas is evolved, which forms a white precipitate in limewater.
  • The chemical Reaction is as follows.

ZnCO3(s)ZinccarbonateZnO(s)Zincoxide+CO2(g)Carbondioxidegas

(ii) Salt on heating brown-colored gas is evolved:

  • Calcium nitrate (Ca(NO3)2) on heating undergoes a decomposition process and leads to the formation of Calcium oxide(CaO), Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) which is brown color gas, and Oxygen (O2)
  • The chemical Reaction is as follows.

2Ca(NO3)2(s)Calciumnitrate2CaO(s)Calciumoxide+4NO2(g)Nitrogendioxide+O2(g)Oxygen
