Generative cells and Vegetative cells exist independently inside pollen grain. Comment.

Solution

Dear student.

Mature pollen grain contains two cells:

  • Vegetative cell
  • Generative cell
Both this cell remain together and independently until cellular differentiation takes place, where generative cell produces two male gametes and vegetative cell produces pollen tube. The pollen tube is required to carry the sperm towards egg. As a result of different purposes of both generative and vegetative cell, each cell develops its own distinct activity during maturation, like generative cell doubles its genetic content and vegetative cell undergoes changes in its cytoplasmic content.

Regards.
