Give a chemical test to distinguish between the following pair of compounds

Ferrous sulphate and ferric sulphate solution using sodium hydroxide solution

Open in App
Solution

Reagent

Ferrous sulphate solution

Ferric sulphate solution

When sodium hydroxide solution is added
  • When ferrous sulphate solution react with sodium hydroxide solution, a dirty green precipitate is formed.

FeSO4(aq)+2NaOH(aq)FeOH2(s)dirtygreenprecipitate+Na2SO4(aq)

  • When ferric sulphate solution react with sodium hydroxide solution, a reddish brown precipitate of Fe(OH)3 is formed.

Fe2SO43(aq)+6NaOH(aq)2FeOH3(s)adirtybrownprecipitate+3Na2SO4(aq)

When excess reagent is added
  • When excess reagent is added, it does not dissolve.
  • Due to atmospheric oxidation, the precipitate slowly turns brown.
  • 4FeOH2(s)+O2(g)+2H2O(l)4FeOH3(s)
  • When excess reagent is added, no reaction takes place.
