Cork:

  1. It is the outer protective layer of the bark of the tree and is also called phellem.
  2. The cells of the cork are rectangular-shaped, dead, and compactly arranged without any intercellular spaces.
  3. The cells of the cork are filled with resins and tannins but lack protoplasm.
  4. The cork cells contain a chemical called suberin which makes them impermeable to water and gases.
  5. The cork protects the plant from infection and mechanical injuries.
