Solution
Anything which occupy space and has mass is called as matter.
Matter can exist in solid, liquid and gases.
In solids the particles are arranged closer to each other.
It has a definite shape and volume.
The important characteristic of solids is that, it can expand on heating.
When solids heated, the thermal energy of the particles present in it increases causing them to expand.
The common example example to show that solids expand on heating is:
Gaping between railway track is minimum in winter session while it is maximum in summer session which indicate that metals (solids) expand on summer (heating).
