Solution

  1. Anything which occupies space and has mass is called matter.
  2. Matter can exist in solids, liquids, and gases.
  3. In gases, the particles are not closely arranged.
  4. It has an indefinite shape and indefinite volume.
  5. Gases can expand on heating due to the increased thermal energy acquired by the particles present in them.
  6. A simple experiment to show that gases expand on heating is:
  • Attach a balloon to an empty plastic bottle. We can observe that the balloon is deflated.
  • Place the bottle in a heating water bath, we can observe that the balloon is expanding.
  • This is due to the expansion of air molecules and water vapor in the bottle due to heating which then fills the balloon.

Thus, gases expand on heating.
