  • Matter can exist in solid, liquid and gases.
  • In solids the particles are arranged closer to each other.
  • It has a definite shape and volume.
  • The important characteristic of solids is that, it can expand on heating.
  • When solids heated, the thermal energy of the particles present in it increases causing them to expand.
  • The common example example to show that solids expand on heating is:
  • Gaping between railway track is minimum in winter session while it is maximum in summer session which indicate that metals (solids) expand on summer (heating).
