Question

Give a suitable term for

(i) A salt formed by incomplete neutralisation of an acid by a base

(ii) A definite number of water molecules bound to some salts

(iii) The process in which a substance absorbs moisture from the atmospheric air to become moist and untimely dissolves in the absorbed water.

Solution

Part 1: Acidic salt :-

  1. Acidic salt is a normal salt that is created by neutralising a strong acid and a weak base. Its aqueous solution turns blue litmus crimson.
  2. Along with another cation, these salts contain ionizable H+ ions. The ionizable H+ is usually classified as an anion. In baking, a few acid salts can be employed.

Part 2: Water of crystallisation

  1. When crystalline crystals form from an aqueous solution, the water of crystallisation is created.
  2. There are no impurities in these crystals. Heat is a problem for these crystals.
  3. The water of crystallisation is water that is not directly bound to the metal cation and is found in the crystalline framework of a metal complex or a salt.
  4. The water that appears to be in crystals is known as crystallisation water or hydration water.

Part 3: Deliquescence

  1. Deliquescent salts have a special property that revolves around water molecules. These are salts that tend to absorb moisture from the air surrounding them, causing the salt to dissolve.
  2. Only when the vapour pressure of the solution being generated (by absorbing moisture from the environment) from the salt is less than the partial vapour pressure of the water vapour present in the surroundings does deliquescence occur.
  3. In a humid atmosphere, there is an excess of water vapour in the atmosphere, causing its partial pressure to be extremely high. As a result, all salts become deliquescent if their solubility in water is sufficient.

Therefore,

(i) a salt formed by incomplete neutralisation of an acid by a base- Acidic salt

(ii) a definite number of water molecules bound to some salts - Water of crystallisation

(iii) the process in which a substance absorbs moisture from the atmospheric air to become moist and untimely dissolves in the absorbed water. (deliquescence) - Deliquescence
