Give a word equation for making of soap

Solution

Soap is made by reacting natural fats and oils with hot sodium hydroxide solution. Ester bonds are broken in the reaction, producing:

-> glycerol
-> soap (sodium salts of the fatty acid parts)

fat + sodium hydroxide → soap + glycerol

This process is called saponification.
