A displacement reaction is a reaction that comprises the replacement of one reactant with another. Depending on the number of atoms being displayed, it is classified as a single displacement reaction or a double displacement reaction.

2. Example of displacement reaction

The reaction in which a metal displaces another nonmetal is given below:

Zn(s)+2HCl(aq)ZnCl2(aq)+H2(g)ZincHydrogenZincchlorideHydrogenchloride

Here, Zinc is classified as a metal, and Chlorine is classified as a non-metal. Zinc displaces hydrogen to form Hydrogen gas with Zinc chloride. Therefore, it is an example where a metal displaces another nonmetal.
