Open in App
Solution

for a man standing on one side of the road,a car moving past him is in motion as it changes its position with respect to the man and every instant.

however, the man sitting inside the car is in rest with respect to the person sitting next to him as he does not changes his position with respect its surrounding. Infact, everything inside the caris in rest with respect to its surrounding. Thus, rest and motion are relative terms

Rest and motion are always relative. A body cannot exist at a state of absolute rest or absolute motion. For example, two persons sitting in a moving bus are at rest w.r.t each other but are in motion w.r.t. a person standing on the roadside. Further, trees, buildings, etc on the surface of the Earth appear to be at rest but infact they are in motion as the Earth revolves around the Sun. Thus, there is no object which can be condisered to be at absolute rest. Hence, rest and motion are relative terms
