Question

Give an experiment to demonstrate osmosis, cohesion tension theory.

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,
Experiment demonstrating cohesion tension theory:-
A twig of plant is placed in a tube containing water and the tube is placed in a beaker containing mercury. As the transpiration occurs due to cohesion of water molecules and adhesion of water molecules with the xylem vessel, the water starts pulling itself in the twig due to which mercury level rises in the tube which demonstrate the transpirational pull due to cohesion tension theory.
Experiment to demonstrate osmosis:-
The end of the thistle funnel is covered with cellophane membrane. The thistle funnel is fixed with a stand. Sugar solution is filled in the thistle funnel. Thistle funnel containing sugar solution is placed in the beaker containing water. The level of the water in the thistle funnel keeps on increasing due to the movement of water from higher concentration of water from the beaker to the thistle funnel containing sugar solution which is concentrated. In this way osmosis can be observed in this experiment.
