Characteristics of parenchyma tissues -

  1. They are permanent living tissue having the ability to divide after maturation.
  2. The parenchyma of stems and roots stores food, nutrients and water.
  3. They are totipotent in nature where a single parenchyma cell of a zygote can develop into an entire plant.
  4. Parenchyma serves as a packing tissue to fill the spaces between tissues in order to maintain the shape and rigidity of plants, it has a large vacuole at the center of the cell.
  5. Intracellular spaces are present, and the cell wall is thin and made of cellulose.
