Formation of fruits

  1. Fusion of the male gamete, from the pollen, with the female gamete in the ovary of the flower results in fertilization.
  2. The maturation and ripening of the ovary results in the formation of fruits.
  3. Formation of fruits also occurs without fertilization. This is called parthenocarpy.
  4. Parthenocarpy is a type of asexual reproduction in plants.
  5. A sterile fruit without seeds is produced as a result of parthenocarpy.
  6. Parthenocarpy is seen in bananas, pineapples, cucumbers, etc.
