Sublimation

  • The process in which a substance from solid-state directly turns into its vapour without changing into the liquid state on heating.
  • The solid which undergoes sublimation is called sublime.
  • Example: Iodine crystals are solid at room temperature (25°C) and 1atm pressure but on heating it convert into iodine vapour.

Deposition/ Desublimation:

  • The process in which vapors directly turn into solid without changing into the liquid state on cooling.
  • It is the reverse of sublimation.
  • The solid obtained on cooling vapors is known as sublimate.
  • Example: Iodine vapors directly change into iodine crystals on cooling.

The solid obtained after solidification of vapors of sublimable compound is sublimate.
