Question

Give reason why is it difficult to walk on sandy beach

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,
When we walk or run on a hard surface, the direction of frictional force between our front foot and the floor is in a backward direction, while the direction of this force between our rear foot(during the action of walking) and the floor is in a forward direction. This forward frictional force prevents our feet from slipping in a backward direction and we become able to move forward. Similarly, when we walk on sand, direction of frictional force between our rearfoot and sand is in a forward direction. To move in forward direction when we push our rear foot backward on sand, sand is displaced backward which cannot provide necessary frictional force to move forward. So, we feel difficulty to walk or run on sand.
