Question

Give reason why liquids expand on heating?

Open in App
Solution

  1. In general, objects expand on heating because by absorbing the heat the molecules move around more.
  2. This vibration, as molecules are pushed further apart, is manifested as a larger volume.
  3. In the case of liquids, the intermolecular space is large as compared to solids because of weaker intermolecular forces.
  4. So the liquid molecules have more freedom to move around and increase their volume.
  5. This results in the expansion of a liquid on heating.
