Respiration is called as the oxidation reaction because it involves the breakdown of glucose in the presence of oxygen to release carbon dioxide water and a large amount of energy. Thus, the use of oxygen to react with water and to form products is called as the oxidation reaction. Similarly, glucose is broken down in presence of oxygen or oxidation of glucose occurs in respiration.
