Question

Give reasons for the bleaching action of SO2 is temporary?

Open in App
Solution

SO2 acts as a reducing agent and bleaches the substance by reduction, but when the substance again comes in contact with the atmosphere, it readily gets oxidised to the coloured compound because of which the material regains the colour.
Hence, the action of SO2 is temporary.
