Question

give reasons for the following:
i) the boiling point of alcohol decrease with increase in branching of the alkyl group
ii) Phenyl Methyl ether reacts with HI to give phenol and methyl iodide and not iodoform and methyl alcohol
iii)Phenol does not give protonation reaction readily .

Solution

Dear student, (i)Branching leads to the atom being more compact and thus decreasing surface area. Therefore, more heat s applied on a small part thus decreasing boiling point. (III)protonation of phenol result in the formation of compound with + charge on oxygen atom. The product is destabilise and hence does not undergo Protonation.
