Bryophytes are called amphibians of the plant kingdom because:
Bryophytes live on damp surfaces such as damp soil, stems of trees and damp walls.

It shows the presence of stems and leaves but roots are absent which is replaced by thread-like structures called rhizoids.

Even though bryophytes live on land, it needs water for reproduction and hence it is called as amphibians of plants.
