Give reasons for the following:
Iron is rendered passive with fuming nitric acid.

Metals like iron, aluminium,cobalt and nickel become inert or you can say passive when treated with pure concentrated nitric acid due to the formation of an extremely thin layer of insoluble metallic oxide on the surface.
This layer formed stops the further reaction with the bulk.
