AIuminium is rendered passive by concentrated nitric acid because when aluminium comes into contact with nitric acid, an impervious layer of aluminium oxide is formed. This layer of aluminium oxide will prevent the nitric acid from coming into contact with the inner aluminium metal. Thus, this layer protects and prevents further reaction.
