Give reasons for the following:

The nitrogen atom of the ammonia molecules leads to the formation of an ammonium ion.

Solution

Ammonium ion (NH4+):

  1. It is formed when a lone pair of ammonia molecules is shared with the H+ ions.
  2. Electronic configuration :N7ā†’2,5H1ā†’1
  3. Ammonia (NH3) molecule has 3 shared pair of electrons with H and 1 lone pair.
  4. NH3ā†’H-NHā€‡|āˆ˜āˆ˜-H
  5. The lone pair is due to 2 electrons left with nitrogen that didn't form any bond. So, nitrogen is responsible for the formation of NH4+ ion.
