Question

Give reasons for the following: why does a car skid on a wet road?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Since we know friction is caused by the interlocking of irregularities present on the two surfaces which are moving relative to each other.
  2. Lubricants form a thin layer between two surfaces which results in the smoothening of these irregularities and friction is reduced.
  3. On a wet road, the water forms a thin film between tires and the road which is known as aquaplaning or hydroplaning.
  4. This thin film of water reduces friction dramatically which results in loss of traction and car skid on the road.
