Question

give reasons why ethene does not form conformers whereas ethane does

Open in App
Solution

1. Ethane forms conformers because it has each carbon attached to two groups and the double bond is not free for rotation.

2. Thus, this automatically gives rise to two conformers namely cis and trans.

3. However, Ethyne has only one group attached to each of triple bonded carbon atoms, thus it has no conformers.
