Question

Give reasons why volume of an irregular solid is measured using a graduated cylinder?

Solution

Irregular object:

  1. An object that does not have regular shape is called an irregular object
  2. As the length, breadth, width of an irregular object are different at different places, their volume cannot be found directly.
  3. Irregular objects include stones, key, screw.

Volume measurement of irregular object:

  1. Volume of an irregular object can be found by using a graduated cylinder in which the irregular object displaces an amount of water.
  2. A graduated cylinder or beaker is taken and filled with some water and the initial reading of graduated cylinder is noted.
  3. Irregular object like stone when immersed into water displaces some amount of water with rise in water level .
  4. Difference in water level reading is the volume of the irregular object , since graduated cylinder has measurement of quantities over its surface noting the reading is convenient

Hence for the convenience of noting the volume at initial and final stages, the volume of an irregular solid is measured using a graduated cylinder.
