Solution

Give scientific reasons for the following statement.

We cannot distinguish colours in
moonlight.

Answer:
  • Retina of the human eye contain photoreceptor cells called rods and cones.
  • Colour vision is possible only through
    cones of the retina.
  • Cones are stimulated only in bright light while rods are sensitive to dim light.
  • Colours like red, violet or purple cannot be distinguished in moonlight because in dim light only the rods function and not the cones.
