i. The spinal cord is a cylindrical structure, which is an extension of the medulla oblongata, and is enclosed in the vertebral column.
ii. The spinal cord is surrounded by three meninges, and consists of the gray matter in the centre and the white matter in the periphery with the cerebrospinal fluid present in the central canal.
iii. The spinal cord gives rise to 31 pairs of spinal nerves.
iv. The major function of the spinal cord is to regulate reflex actions and to carry information from various body parts or organs to the brain and vice versa.
