Question

Give the balanced equations for reactions of aqueous ammonia with the following:

Iron(III) chloride

Open in App
Solution

Reaction with iron(III) chloride (FeCl3):

  • When ammonium hydroxide NH4OH is treated with iron(III) chloride solution FeCl3, it produces a reddish brown precipitate of ferric hydroxide FeOH3, which is insoluble in excess of NH4Cl.
  • One mole of iron(III) chloride solution reacts with three moles of ammonium hydroxide to form one mole of ferric hydroxide and three moles of NH4Cl.

The balanced chemical equation is:FeCl3(aq)+3NH4OH(aq)⟶Fe(OH)3(s)↓+3NH4Cl(aq)
