Being most famous of the few sun temples built in India, Konark or Konark Sun temple is dedicated to the Hindu sun god Surya. It is built as a giant stone chariot with 12 wheels.
Location-. It is located about 35 km northeast of the Puri City in Odisha.
-It was built in 1250 CE by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty (8th century CE - 15th century CE). The temple in its present state was declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site in 1984 CE.
-It is built in Nagara style of temple architecture.
-It is also known as Surya Devalaya.
-Konark Sun Temple is also depicted on the reverse side of the Indian currency note of Rs 10 to signify its importance to Indian cultural heritage.
- Many sculptures are also carved in its walls like of deities, apsaras and images from the daily life and culture of the people, various animals, aquatic creatures, birds, legendary creatures, Hindu texts.
It is one of the marvellous temple of India.
