Give the electronic distribution in Magnesium atom and Magnesium ion. How do these electronic configurations differ?

The atomic number of magnesium is 12. It has a total of 12 electrons. Magnesium ion (Mg2+) ion is formed by losing two electrons from its outermost shell. Therefore, it will have only 10 electrons in it. Their electronic configuration can be given as,

Magnesium atom (Mg) 2 8 2

Magnesium ion (Mg 2+) 2 8

  • Mg2+ ion has only two shells and its electronic configuration is similar to that of the noble gas element Neon (Ne) - Stable Octet configuration.
  • Mg atom has three shells with 2 electrons in the outer shell i.e. M-shell.
