Give the general characteristics and examples of the kingdom Monera.

Kingdom Monera (Monos – single) includes prokaryotes and shows the following characteristics:
  • They are typically unicellular organisms. A nuclear envelope is absent. Ribosomes and simple chromatophores are the only subcellular organelles in the cytoplasm.
  • Sap vacuoles do not occur. Instead, gas vacuole may be present.
  • Mode of nutrition may be autotrophic (photosynthetic or chemosynthetic) or heterotrophic.
  • The organisms are either non-motile or move by the beating of simple flagella or by gliding.
