The deficiency of protein leads to a condition which is known as protein-energy malnutrition(PEM) There are two types of PEM - marasmus and kwashiorkor. Kwashiorkor:
Kwashiorkor is a type of disease that occurs mostly due to a deficiency of proteins.
Symptoms of kwashiorkor in children include weakness, thin limbs, pale and dry skin, and reddish hair.
Marasmus:
Marasmus is a type of disease which occurs due to a deficiency of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.
Children suffering from marasmus appear thin, with their bones which are distinctly visible, tired, and confused.
