(i) Oogenesis (ii) Conception (iii) Parturition (iv) Gestation (v) Lactation
Ovum is produced in the female ovaries by the process called oogenesis. Once the ovum is released during ovulation it travels through the fallopian tube awaiting to be fertilised by a sperm. Sperm has to be transported to the site where the egg is present and this process is called conception or fertilisation. Post fertilisation, the zygote implants in the uterus where it undergoes various stages of development for 9 months. This period of 9 months is called gestation. At the end of gestation the baby is delivered. This process by which a woman gives birth to the baby is called parturition. After the baby is born it is nourished by the mother’s milk produced in her breasts by the process of lactation.
