Biological functions of lipids :
(1) Glycolipids are components of cell membrane.
(2) Fats and oils store food energy in plants and animals. They provide over twice amount of energy as compared to carbohydrates.
(3) Waxes provides vital waterproofing for body surfaces. They are water repelling solids that are protective coatings on leaves fruits berries animal fur and feather of birds.
(4) Bile acids are steroids which aid digestion of fat in intestine.
(5) Prostaglandins can lower blood pressure, affect blood platelet aggregation during clotting, lower gastric secretion and stimulate uterine contractions during child birth.
