Open in App
Solution

Inertia:

Inertia is defined as a property of matter by which it remains at the state of rest or in uniform motion in the same straight line unless acted upon by some external force.

Inertia of rest:

When the resistance is offered by the body to continue in the state of rest unless an external force acts on it.

Examples:

  1. A ketchup bottle is being shaken. Inertia causes the ketchup to spill out of the bottle when the bottom is brought down and then abruptly stopped.
  2. When a balloon in a car moves, it appears to move, but the balloon is actually attempting to stay in the same spot it was before the car moved.
