Solution

Compounds: It is a substance that is formed by mixing two or more elements in a defined ratio.

Mixtures: It is a substance made by mixing two or more pure substances in an undefined proportion.

Water is considered a compound and not a mixture because:

  1. It is formed by combining hydrogen and oxygen in a defined ratio, and its molecular formula is H2O.
  2. It does not show properties of individual elements like hydrogen or oxygen but shows new properties of the compound, unlike minerals which show properties of constituent substances.
  3. For instance, hydrogen and oxygen exist as gases while water exists in a liquid state at room temperature.

Therefore, water is considered a compound and not a mixture.
