Solution

Compounds:

Substances which made up of different kinds of atoms that are chemically bonded, which can not separate by physical methods.

Examples: H2O, NH3

Mixtures

Materials consist of different substances which are not chemically bonded and can be separated by physical means.

Examples: Naphthalene and sodium chloride

  • We know that water has a chemical formula H2O, in which the hydrogen and oxygen atoms are chemically combined.
  • We can not separate the hydrogen, oxygen atoms by any other physical methods.
  • The hydrogen and oxygen atoms present in the ratio 1:8 and this ratio is fixed

Hence, we can say that water is a compound, not a mixture.
