Question

Given below are two statements:

Statement I: Bohr’s theory accounts for the stability and line spectrum of Li+ ion.

Statement II: Bohr’s theory was unable to explain the splitting of spectral lines in the presence of a magnetic field.

Solution

The correct option is C Statement I is false but statement II is true
Answer: (c)

Bohr's theory accounts only for the stability and spectrum of single electronic species (eg : He+, Li2+ etc) Thus, statement I is false.

Limitation of Bohr's theory:
1. It cannot predict the relative intensities of spectral lines.
2. It does not explain the Zeeman Effect, when the spectral line is split into several components in the presence of a magnetic field.

Hence, statement II is true.
