Question

Question 28
Given below is a conversation between two farmers Heera and Beera.
Heera : Brother Beera, your maize crops looks beautiful! They have grown pretty fast.

Beera : Yes, I have sprayed urea this time. What about you?
Heera : Well, I am still relying on good old cow dung. I am saving money for buying a tractor.
Beera : That’s good. Tractor saves a lot of time and labour.
Heera : Yes, it’s been very labour intensive for me and now these weeds have come up.
Beera : Try weedicides, they are very effective.

Now answer the following questions.
(i) List the practices which are not environment friendly and why?
(ii) What is the advantage of modern agriculture implements over traditional ones?
(iii) Name one weedicide and the precaution farmers must take during its application.

Solution

Part (i): Non-environment friendly practices:

  1. Use of Chemical Fertilisers: Although chemical fertilisers boost productivity and crop yield, extensive usage of fertilisers is non-environment friendly.
  2. This depletes the natural ability of the soil, in a long run, to maintain its nutritional balance.
  3. Use of weedicides and pesticides: Weedicides and pesticides normally protect the crop against attacks by pests and competition from weeds.
  4. But in a long run, some weeds develop resistsance against the weedicides.
  5. This leads to deterioration of the crop yield.

Part (ii): Modern agriculture:

  1. The modern agricultural implements have multiple advantages over the traditional ones.
  2. Traditional implements are labour intensive and require longer time for the operation to be carried out.
  3. Modern implements reduce the time and labour costs.
  4. Hence it directly enhances the crop quality as well as its quantity.
  5. Better irrigation and cultivation procedures.

Part (iii): Examples of weedicides:

  1. 2,4-Dichlorophenoxy acetic acid
  2. Napthalene acetic acid.
Precautions:
  1. A separate sprayer should be used for application of weedicides.
  2. Optimum concentration of weedicide must be used so as not to damage the crops.
  3. The field beds should be levelled properly to avoid accumulation of chemicals in one corner of the field during rains or irrigation.
