  • In the Union of South Africa,European whites were a minority. But the English introduced several laws in favour of their own people. Non-whites were denied civic rights like voting, they were not allowed to acquire land in areas reserved for whites. As a result of this, 90% of the land was owned by about 20% of the population which was white. Non-whites were forced to work in mines and farms by law.
The paragraph is talking about the start of the Apartheid system and how discrimination of non-white people was legalised. The non-white people were not allowed to move freely in the country.
