(i) Name the type of pollution shown in the picture.

(ii) Name one source of this pollution.

(iii) How does this pollution affect human health?

(iv) Write one measures to reduce this pollution.

Solution

(i)

  1. Air pollution is shown in the picture.
  2. Air pollution is defined as the contamination of the inside or outside surroundings by any chemical, physical, or biological representative that alters the natural properties of the atmosphere.

(ii) Main sources of air pollution:

1. Traffic and Mobility:

Pollutants are emitted by the gasoline and diesel engines used in automobiles, ships, railways, and other transportation.

2. Industry and Heating:

The burning of fuels such as coal and petroleum in industrial activities such as power plants, distilleries, and factories emits a wide range of pollutants.

3. Additional Resources:

Not all air pollution is caused by human activity. Because of the diameter of the particles spread, sand and sandstorms from deserts are accountable for pollution.

(iii) Air pollution health impacts on humans:

  1. High amounts of air pollution can have several negative health effects.
  2. It raises the chances of getting respiratory disease, heart problems, and lung cancer.
  3. Air pollution has been linked to health effects in both the short and long term.
  4. Those who are already unwell are exposed to more severe consequences.
  5. Kids, the elderly, and also the underprivileged are much more susceptible.

(iv) Measures to reduce this pollution:

1. Taking public transportation.

2. When not being used, switch off the lights.

3. Recycle and reuse materials.

4. Avoid using plastic bags.

5. Reducing the number of forest fires and smoking.

6. Use fans rather than air conditioners.

(v) CFCs:

The gaseous molecules are known as CFCs, or chlorofluorocarbons, react with the ozone layer, depleting it and causing ozone holes.

Consequences of ozone hole:

  1. Increased UV levels of radiation at the earth's surface resulting from ozone layer depletion, which is harmful to human health.
  2. The Ozone layer depletion rise in certain types of skin cancer, eye diseases, and immune deficiency disorders. These are among the major negative consequences caused by the depletion of the ozone layer.
