Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) is released by the pituitary gland. FSH stimulates the growth of the follicle in order to produce the oocyte. The process of formation of haploid female gamete is called oogenesis.

The sudden increase in the levels of LH is called the LH surge. It results in the rupture of the mature graafian follicle and thus the secondary oocyte is released. This is called ovulation.

The ruptured graafian follicle transforms into a yellow coloured corpus luteum.
