Follicular stimulating hormone is released by the pitutary gland. FSH stimulates the growth of the follicle in order to produce the oocyte. The proccess of formation of oocyte is called oogenesis.The mature follicles secrete estrogen, increase in the level of estrogen causes the sudden increase in the level of LH. This sudden increase is called the LH surge. It results in the rupturing of the mature graafian follicle and it releases the secondary oocyte. If there is no fertilisation then the remaining follicular cells results in the growth of corpus luteum.
