Question

Given that sound travels in air at 340 ms1, find the wavelength of the waves in air produced by the 20 kHz sound source.If the same source is put in a water tank, what would be the wavelength of the sound waves produced in water? Speed of sound in water = 1480 ms1.

Solution

Given:
Speed of sound in air = 340 ms1
Frequency of source = 20 kHz = 20,000 Hz
Speed of sound in water = 1480 ms1

In Air,
We know that,
Speed of sound = Wavelength x Frequency
=> 340 = Wavelength x 20,000
=> Wavelength = 34020,000
=> Wavelength = 0.017 m

In Water,
We know that,
Speed of sound = Wavelength x Frequency
=> 1480 = Wavelength x 20,000
=> Wavelength = 148020,000
=> Wavelength = 0.074 m
