Question

Given the atomic number, number of neutrons and charge of an ion, 20, 20 and +2 respectively.Find the symbol, mass number, number of protons, number of electrons of the ion.

Solution

  • Since the atomic number is given as 20, the element is calcium (Ca).
  • Calcium on losing two electrons will get a charge +2 and the symbol of ion: Ca+2
  • Mass number (A)= sum of protons (p) and neutrons (n) = (20+20) = 40.
  • As calcium lost two electrons, the total number of electrons in the calcium ion=(20-20)=18.
  • the number of protons = atomic number = 20.
  • Hence, symbol=Ca+2 , atomic number = number of protons = 20, number of electrons = 18, mass number = 40.
